Sell Apple Inc. (AAPL) Stock While It Gasps for Air

For most of this year, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) stock has been a Wall Street darling. A note from Goldman Sachs back on June 9 that said the newly dubbed FAAMG stocks — Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB), Apple, Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Google parent Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) overvalued and trading too much like safe-haven stocks.

Would Apple acquire athenahealth? It might make sense, one analyst says

If Apple was looking to plunge deeper into the digital health market, it might make sense for the California tech giant to buy Watertown-based athenahealth — at least according to one analyst. CNBC previously reported that Apple (AAPL) is working on ways to turn the iPhone into a way for patients to centrally manage their health data, with connection to a cloud-hosting platform. Citigroup analyst Garen Sarafian speculated this week that given that context, it would make a lot of sense for Apple to acquire athenahealth (ATHN).

Apple Inc. (AAPL): Bumpy Ride Ahead or All Roads Clear for iPhone Launch?

Does Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) heading into its iPhone 8 launch full steam ahead, or is the tech titan on the brink of a smartphone growth slowdown? Barclays analyst Mark Moskowitz enters the debate from the sidelines, wary that the giant is at a point where there simply is "not as much juice left" as it veers from a path of "peak valuation." As such, fearing that the iPhone 8 will come up short of high anticipation, the analyst reiterates an Equal Weight on shares of AAPL with a $123 price target, which represents a just under 15% downside from where the stock is currently trading. "Our concern is that Apple's P/E recently has been close to 14.4x consensus C2018 EPS estimates,” the analyst underscores, "which is near the peak valuation levels of the iPhone 6 cycle (14.9x)." When a giant is at the top, there is always room to fall, meaning, "This could mean a bumpy ride lower if the stock drifts back to its 3-year P/E average of 12.2x if prospects of a mega cycle diminish later this year," asserts Moskowitz.

How Tech Dependent Is This Stock Market?

Facebook (FB) Apple (AAPL), Amazon.com (AMZN), Microsoft (MSFT) and Alphabet (GOOGL), otherwise known collectively as FAAMG -- have accounted for roughly 40% of the Standard & Poor’s 500’s gains this year. Cliff Asness, an influential quant hedge-fund manager, is trying to debunk the notion that the stock market is all that dependent on the performance of a handful of big-tech names. Writing on the website of his firm, AQR Capital Management, Asness argues that “Any way you slice the data, there isn’t anything truly exceptional about the last two calendar years even if you extend the period to include the strong 2017 FAANG performance through May.” Asness continues: “In this case the “why” is pretty simple — calendar year 2016 was not a particularly great year for the FAANGs (and you may notice the news stories indeed died down for a while).‘’ He points out that Old Economy stocks like JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Bank of America (BAC) and Chevron (CVX) were among the top contributors to S&P 500 returns last year, while the FAANGs performed more in line with the rest of the market.

Apple Stock's Got 'Not As Much Juice Left' Near Peak Valuation, Says Barclays

Barclays’s hardware analyst Mark Moskowitz today reiterates an Equal Weight rating on shares of Apple (AAPL), writing that there is “not as much juice left” in the stock as it flirts with a “peak valuation,” and the next iPhone may disappoint the most bullish expectations. "Our concern is that Apple's P/E recently has been close to 14.4x consensus C2018 EPS estimates,” observes Moskowitz, "which is near the peak valuation levels of the iPhone 6 cycle (14.9x)." "This could mean a bumpy ride lower if the stock drifts back to its 3-year P/E average of 12.2x if prospects of a mega cycle diminish later this year." Moskowitz, looking at Street consensus for sales of the next iPhone, presumably an “iPhone 8,” later this year, thinks expectations that the device will return the iPhone to 10% to 15% unit growth are unrealistic.

Apple V. Tesla: Probably, Apple Will Make a Car, Says Morgan Stanley

Morgan Stanley’s Katy Huberty, who follows Apple (AAPL), today follows up the remarks by her colleague Adam Jonas, analyst covering Tesla Motors (TSLA), about what Apple’s investment in “autonomy” writ large means for the the future of self-driving car competition.  Yesterday, Jonas wrote that Tesla faces “serious competition” from Apple, among others, as my colleague Ben reported. All this, of course, comes from an article yesterday by Bloomberg’s Alex Webb and Emily Chang in which Apple chief Tim Cook told the reporters that his company is working on making “autonomous systems,” without specifically saying Apple will make a car or car-navigation system, or the like.  Huberty, who maintains an Overweight rating on Apple stock, and a $177 price target, writes that knowing Apple, they won’t stop at some general self-driving-car software, but will build a car:  From the Apple perspective, core self-driving software is likely the first step in its autonomous pursuits, and we believe Apple will eventually move beyond just software into designing a full car and/or launching a platform for third party services and content over time.

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) Share Gains Do Not Look Sustainable, Apple Inc. (AAPL) AR-iPhone Buying Interest at an All-Time High

Goldman Sachs and Loup Ventures are out with opposite perspectives on two tech leaders: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL). One analyst casts serious reservations as to AMD's ability to sustain earnings in the long-term, questioning the driving ability of cryptocurrency mining as translating to earnings growth in the long-term. Conversely, Apple expert Gene Munster wagers that this time around, the newest iPhone cycle is attracting more interest than before, attributing a rise in buying intent to the iPhone 8's augmented reality capabilities.

Apple Inc. (AAPL) iPhone X Presents Opportunity for Insatiable Demand, Tesla Inc (TSLA) Model 3 Not Enough to Outperform Rival Stock Giants

Analysts are placing votes in favor of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), charging a great deal of hope riding on the iPhone X launch. The BlueFin team argues that iPhone units should surge forward on back of the iPhone X release, calling for long-term growth sustainability while Bernstein remains unfazed as to challenges with iPhone sales in China, predicting the upgrade rates are about to rise back up again.  Yet, Morgan Stanley conversely is hesitant on Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) despite high Model 3 expectations from loyal Tesla investors, wondering whether CEO Elon Musk's brainchild truly has what it takes to oust the likes of Apple and Amazon from the top of the leaderboard.
